I’ve been thinking about what the next portfolio for my website should focus on… I’ve finally decided and it is something I have little experience in doing successfully… The next portfolio will be focusing on a structural street photographer. Someone who takes images of buildings and patterns in cities.
I have yet to find the exact person I want to study and focus on for the Portfolio but I did do some research and found some potential candidates. I would like to find someone who’s photography inspires me at least close to the amount Yanidel’s did.
The reason for choosing structural street photography is that I like the simplicity of the pictures and the way experienced photographers take something seen every day and turn it into something special. I believe this ability is important for a photographer and should be something a photographer should be able to do in all aspects of photography. As I currently focus mainly on street photography, I thought this would be the next natural step to take in furthering my skills.
If I’m able to learn enough about the technique and thought processes of structural street photography, I’m hoping it will translate into my standard street photography. In a way that provides me with more creative ways to take pictures to start planting the groundwork for developing my own style.
If you have any structural street photographers that inspire you don’t hesitate to comment and let me know as the more I see before deciding the better.
I don’t know how I feel about editing street photography images that I take. At the moment the most editing I do of an image is just exposure and contrast changes to make the raw image file resemble what I saw when I took the image. But I do understand that sometimes major editing, cropping and colour adjustments can help make an image a lot better. Despite this I find myself reluctant to do too much editing in either Lightroom or Photoshop. I will admit part of it is due to my lack of experience with the programs, although I do plan on learning more about them. There is also the factor that I’d like to get good enough at framing a picture that cropping would only be needed if something was out of my control, I find it is a bit of a shortcut to rely too heavily on cropping in post-production and one that could catch up to you one day.
My ideology now when I go out to do some street photography is that I’d like to let the picture do the talking without too much interference on my part through editing. I am just the tool the story is using to get it’s point across. I’m the middle man. I can decide on how the image is framed, the angle it is taken in and the settings as well, but if the image cannot tell its story after I’ve manipulated these three things then no further amount of manipulation is truly going to get its message across, it will only get the photographers.
I understand different styles of street photography and photography in general require different mindsets but in my opinion at this time, candid street photography should not go through too much post editing if realism is part of your story.
I’d just like to end on the message that my views on this are subject to change as the more I learn about photography the more my views will most likely change. I am open to others interpretation and thoughts on this subject because as a student I feel the more perspectives on photography I can learn and understand, the better I will become.
Well the blogs been up around half a week now I officially recorded the day it went up so I can have a bloggerversary next year on the 9th of August. Hopefully by then I will have 12 more portfolios up and at least 52 more blog posts and around 365 daily photos. Well that’s the plan anyway.
So back to where we left off in the last blog I’ll be talking about my other goals for the blog today. With the main one out the way these other ones are there more for lack of a better word ‘greed’ goals. I am calling them this as they aren’t as necessary for me to get motivation for the blog they are like extras that would be good if they came but not too missed if they didn’t. Like at a Subway restaurant when there is a broken cookie and the server asks if you want it, the greed goal.
So, the first greed goal would be that in the future if I decide to have a full-fledged career in photography I hope that my website and blog will help serve basically as another reference for people who are thinking about hiring me. They can use the blog to not only see my photography but also see what sort of person I am, which in a photographer for emotional events could be very important.
The second greed goal is not the reason I’m blogging as I believe it is not why someone should start a blog and that is why I am considering it a MAJOR greed goal and it is to have a following. People who come to my website and blog to see my new posts, daily photos, portfolios and whatever is to come because either they like my content and/or me. Like I said this is not the reason I have started blogging and out of 100% of my motivation and reason for blogging it probably makes up 1%.
The third greed goal is just because I like to challenge myself. Like a lot. I love a challenge. I’m competitive. No challenge… and I won’t find it too fun. Whether it be a physical challenge or mental challenge I really really really like challenges. And photography presents a billion of them. It’s ever-changing and an ever-learning hobby that doesn’t really compare to anything else out there. And it’s so hard to be good. To be able to convey emotion and tell a story all within one image, all within your own way… now that’s hard. But it’s this challenge and the way it is always different which makes me take my camera with me whenever I leave the house. This enjoyment I get from challenging my shyness taking street photography pictures alone is crazy. Not only this but it pushes me out of my comfort zone and has already helped me meet new people and I hope it continues to do so.
Now these are my secondary/greed goals for the blog the third one is probably the most realistic one and more of a secondary goal rather than a greed goal but I think it should still be there. So the first week will be over most likely by the time I write my next blog but then I may get the urge to write one before next Sunday and if I do and I have time, I will.
Once again thank you for finding my website and blog and I hope you enjoy my content.
